NATIONAL READING PANEL SERIES
Plus a new Interventions Component!
K-5 (including Special Educators)

We are once again offering teachers the opportunity to build a successful reading program.  This series of literacy classes provides an in depth look at the research by the National
Reading Panel, identifying the components of a successful reading program. 
This may be the last time these classes are offered on the district level.  Taught under the direction of Paulette Roberts and District Literacy Coaches.

SECONDARY SCIENCE ADOPTION TRAINING

We will be sending information to the Science teachers as soon as we make a final decision on adoption materials.

VOCABULARY REFRESHER
K-5 (Including Special Educators)

 The district vocabulary program brought vocabulary to the fore front and gave us great new insight into vocabulary instruction.  As a result we are all doing a better job introducing students to the district identified vocabulary words.  Come and join us for a belief refresher and an in-depth look at taking vocabulary instruction to the next level.

Utah Peoples and Cultures Workshop
Presenter:  Jessie Embry from BYU’s Reed Center

Participants will be able to earn 1 semester credit
This workshop is especially for all 4th and 7th grade teachers, but if you have an interest in the topic please plan on attending.  The course will briefly discuss 19th Century immigrants to Utah but will focus primarily on 20th Century Utah including: 

Native Americans in the 20th Century
American Nationalism
The impact of WWII
20th Century Immigrants
New roles for women
Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s
Feminist Movement in the 1970’s
Mormon immigration in the 20th Century
Immigrant groups and their relationship

MAKING CENTERS WORK
K-5 (Including Special Educators)

Learn how to increase students’ intrinsic motivation and keep their attention by providing choices, making learning relevant and personal, and making learning engaging through the use of Literacy Work Stations (centers) in the classroom!  (Sign up for one of the two dates).

DIGITAL CAMERA IN THE CLASSROOM
&
MULTIMEDIA STORY TELLING
Kindergarten-12 (Including Special Educators)

 Bring your digital camera (or borrow one) and learn the basic how to of taking digital photos for the classroom.  See a demonstration, take pictures, and then practice transferring the images from the camera to your computer for editing using Picassa2.  Learn to make “Ken Burn style” presentations from digital photos.  Add music and narration behind your photo.  Create zooming and panning.  Student uses will be included.

Credit available for SUU, you must attend both classes and do a short out of class assignment.

An Introduction

This course is REQUIRED for ALL new teachers!

This workshop will focus on the use of Six Traits Writing model.  This motivating professional development class is required for all teachers in Box Elder School District.  If you have not had this training, take advantage of this opportunity.

                        BLOGS, VLOGS AND PODCASTING

Learn to plan, produce and maintain an online blog with audio (podcasting) and video (vlog) content that can enhance your classroom communications.  Get a practical overview of podcasting, blogs and vlogs as new communication tools and create your own  during the workshop.

ACTIVATING COMPREHENSION: USING NON-FICTION IN THE CLASSROOM

Kindergarten-5th Grade (Including Special Educators)

Comprehension is the reason for reading!  One of the best ways to engage students in reading and learning and activate their comprehension is through nonfiction.  Nonfiction can help students learn to read purposefully and actively, to develop strategies, to interact directly with a text—while exploring new people and places, investigating new ideas about the world around them on their own individual reading level.  This class will offer many practical suggestions and activities to help bring nonfiction into your reading curriculum!

THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING SCIENCE

The goal of this class is to provide 3-12 teachers who want to explore ways of improving how they teach science.  Teachers will be encouraged to reflect upon and discuss their own practices and changes they could make in their classrooms in light of the current research and requirements.

There will be a follow-up in the fall to this class.

                      EFFECTIVE TEACHING WITH VISUAL MEDIA
                     Kindergarten-12th Grade (Including Special Educators)

Designed for those who are unfamiliar with visual learning and the use of graphic organizers in the classroom, this workshop demonstrates that visual learning is among the very best methods for teaching students at any age or grade level how to think and learn.  Participants become familiar with webs, idea maps and concept maps and successfully implement these concepts into classroom projects and applications.

Use music to learn to read?  Are you kidding?  Come experience how music influences important cognitive and literacy skill development in children.  Learn the benefits of integrating music with your literacy program.  We will use the State Song Book plus other new ideas too.  Come prepared to move and create!  Bring one of your favorite picture books, that you like to use in class.

The new elementary math core will necessitate an update of our curriculum map.  In the past we have mapped the math core with the adopted curriculum materials, this year teachers have requested that we map the core to the curriculum and to the calendar.  If you are interested in participating in this endeavor please sign-up.  We would like to have at least two teachers from each school.
