Invitation to share "Public Comment" concerning the BESD 25-26 School Fee Schedule
Message:
Good This is a reminder for the Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Public Comment surrounding secondary school fees for grades 6-12. There are no school fees in K-5 elementary schools.
Per District Policy 5230, the Box Elder School District's Board of Education is required to hold 2 Public Comment sessions prior to approving the 25-26 School Fee Schedule. Information for these two meetings are written below:
- The first session was held, Wednesday, May 14th, 2025 @ Harris Intermediate School (515 North 800 West, Tremonton, Utah) at 7:00pm.
- The second session will be Wednesday, June 11th, 2025 @ BESD District Office (ILSC Building - 960 South Main, Brigham City, Utah) at 6:30pm. (We anticipate the public comment portion of the meeting will be right at the beginning around 6:35pm.)
The state legislators this Spring passed a bill called House Bill 344, that has greatly changed our district school fee schedule from years past. You will notice 3 significant changes between the 24-25 school fee schedule and the proposed 25-26 school fee schedule.
- Districts are no longer able to charge a "General Class Fee". Last year for example, a high school student was charged $91 which allowed them to take up to 18 classes during the school year regardless of class. The school took this $91 and divided it up to each of the departments to purchases supplies and materials to support students. Beginning the 25-26 school year, students will be charged a specific class fee for each of the 18 classes they select. Some classes cost $0 and some classes cost up to $40.
- Districts are no longer able to charge a fee for Health, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Science classes. There will be no "class fee" charged for these 5 contents.
- Districts will provide a "Spending Plan with Description" for each class. As you review each class fee, you will see this description.
We hope that you will share your feedback with the school board concerning the Proposed BESD 25-26 School Fees June 11th. Recognizing that not all can attend, if you can't make it but would like to share your input, please email your feedback to keith.mecham@besd.net and we will share your feedback with members of the school board.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us.
Sincerely,
Box Elder Board of Education
